Privacy toggles — what each one does

Manga Vault has ten privacy toggles that control what friends (and the public, if you enable a public profile) see when they look at you. Here’s what each one does.

How to access

  1. Open Edit Profile (Social tab → tap your profile card → Edit Profile).
  2. Scroll to the Privacy section.
  3. Privacy is grouped into Basic Settings and PRO Settings.

The toggles

1. Show Bio

Default: On What it controls: Whether your bio text is visible on your profile. Off: Friends see your name and avatar but not your bio.

2. Show Favorite Genre

Default: On What it controls: Whether the favorite-genre tags on your profile are visible. Off: Genre tags are hidden.

3. Show Member Since

Default: On What it controls: Whether the date you joined Manga Vault is shown on your profile. Off: Hidden.

4. Show PRO Badge

Default: On (relevant for PRO subscribers) What it controls: Whether the gold star PRO badge appears next to your name. Off: PRO subscribers can hide the badge while keeping all PRO features.

5. Show Activity Status

Default: On What it controls: Whether the green “active in last 24 hours” dot appears on your avatar to friends. Off: Friends never see your active dot.

6. Show Achievements

Default: On What it controls: Whether your unlocked achievements are visible on your profile. Off: The Achievements section on your profile is hidden from friends.

7. Show Top Series

Default: On What it controls: Whether the “Top Series” section (the series you collect most heavily) is visible on your profile. Off: Hidden.

8. Show Collection

Default: On What it controls: Whether your full collection list (every volume) is visible to friends. Off: Friends see your stats and bio but not your individual volumes. The In Common / Unique tabs also stop working (since they require collection data).

9. Allow Comparison

Default: On What it controls: Whether friends can compare collections with you (the In Common / Unique tabs on your profile). Off: Friends viewing your profile see “Comparison unavailable” instead of the In Common / Unique tabs.

This is server-enforced — even if a friend’s app tried to bypass the privacy toggle, our backend doesn’t return comparison data when this is off. See Why “Allow Comparison” is special.

10. Show Value

Default: Off What it controls: Whether your estimated collection value (in dollars) is visible to friends. Off (default): Your collection value is hidden. Stats might still show “X volumes” but the dollar value is replaced with ---.

This one is off by default because dollar value is more sensitive than other stats. Turn it on if you want friends to see your collection’s worth.

How privacy toggles compose

Multiple toggles can be off at once. The combined effect:

  • Show Bio off + Show Achievements off — Friends see only your name and avatar; everything else is hidden.
  • Allow Comparison off + Show Collection off — Friends can see your name, bio, and (if Show Achievements is on) some aggregate info, but can’t see specific volumes or compare with you.

Defaults overview

Out of the box, most toggles are on. The one exception is Show Value, which defaults to off. The thinking: dollar value is more sensitive than other collection data, so we ask you to opt in rather than opt out.

If you want to be more private, manually toggle off whichever fields you’d rather hide. If you want maximum sharing, just turn Show Value on; everything else is already on by default.

Server-enforced vs client-only

Most toggles are server-enforced — our backend filters data based on your settings before it ever leaves our servers. This means even if a friend’s app version tried to ignore your privacy setting, they wouldn’t have the data to display.

For a few toggles (e.g., the visual appearance of activity dots), the toggle is also enforced client-side as a defense-in-depth measure.

Public profile and privacy

When you enable a public profile, the same privacy toggles apply. So if Show Achievements is off, your public profile also hides achievements. Public profiles never bypass your privacy settings.

Saving changes

Privacy changes save when you tap Save in Edit Profile. They take effect immediately for friends viewing your profile.

Tip: Private but findable

A common privacy setup is: keep Show Bio on, turn Show Collection off and Allow Comparison off. This makes you findable and lets people see who you are, while keeping your collection completely private.
