Scanning a barcode
Scanning is the fastest way to add a manga to your collection. Most physical manga volumes have a barcode on the back cover containing the 13-digit ISBN — that’s all we need.
How to scan
- Open the Scan tab from the bottom navigation.
- The camera will activate and show a scanning frame.
- Hold the back of your manga 4–8 inches from your camera, with the barcode inside the scanning frame.
- Keep the volume steady — we’ll detect the barcode automatically. No tap needed.
- When we find a match, a result card slides up from the bottom of the screen.
What happens after a scan
The result card shows one of four outcomes:
- Found — The volume is in our catalog. Confirm details and tap to add it. See What “Found” means.
- Coming Soon — The volume has been approved but isn’t quite live in the catalog yet. See What “Coming Soon” means.
- Pending — Someone (maybe you) has already requested this volume and it’s awaiting review. See What “Pending” means.
- Not Found — We don’t have this volume yet. You can request that we add it.
Tips for cleaner scans
- Good lighting helps. Tap the flashlight icon in the corner of the scanner to turn on the torch in dim rooms.
- Hold steady, don’t move. Let the camera focus before expecting a read.
- Flatten the cover. Slight curling on paperback covers can throw off the read. Press the cover flat against a hard surface if needed.
- Try a different angle. Tilting the volume 10–20° sometimes helps cameras find the barcode contrast.
- Clean your camera lens. A smudged lens is the most common cause of slow scans.
Manual entry as a fallback
Can’t get a barcode read? Tap Enter ISBN Manually at the bottom of the Scan tab and type the 13-digit ISBN by hand. See Entering an ISBN manually.
Battery and warmth
Extended scanning sessions can cause your phone to feel warm. This is normal — the camera and barcode-detection processing are both active. We recommend taking short breaks every 50–100 scans.
Privacy
The scanner uses your camera in real-time to detect barcodes. Images are processed on-device and are never uploaded or stored.
