Username rules
Your username is your unique handle on Manga Vault — like @yourname. Friends can find you by it, and it’s also the basis for your public profile URL (if you enable one).
Format requirements
- Lowercase letters and numbers only. No uppercase, no spaces, no symbols (except underscore).
- Underscores allowed.
manga_collectorworks;manga-collectordoesn’t. - 3–20 characters.
- Must start with a letter.
1cool_userdoesn’t work;cool_user1does.
Uniqueness
Usernames must be unique across all of Manga Vault. If your desired username is taken, try variations:
- Add a number (
manga_collector42). - Add an underscore (
manga_collector_). - Use a different word.
Case sensitivity
Usernames are stored lowercase. When you type a username (e.g., to search for a friend), case doesn’t matter — MangaCollector and mangacollector resolve to the same user.
How to change your username
- Open Edit Profile.
- Tap the Username field.
- Type a new username.
- Tap Save.
If the new username is available, it saves. If taken, you’ll see a “Username already taken” error and the field shakes.
Change frequency
You can change your username, but we recommend not doing it frequently. Usernames are how friends find you and how your public profile URL is constructed — changing it breaks links and can confuse people.
There isn’t a hard rate-limit on username changes (yet), but please don’t change your username daily.
What happens to old usernames when you change
Your old username becomes available for someone else to claim. Specifically:
- Your old public profile URL (e.g.,
https://mangavault.app/@oldname) stops resolving — anyone visiting it sees “Profile not found”. - A new user can later register
oldnameand inherit that URL.
So if you’ve shared your public profile URL anywhere (social media, business card, content creator bio), think before you change.
Reserved usernames
A few usernames are reserved and can’t be claimed:
- Single-letter usernames (e.g.,
a). - Usernames matching popular Manga Vault terms (
admin, support, mangavault). - Usernames that resemble system paths or could be confused for routes.
If you try a reserved one, you’ll see an error.
Impersonation
Don’t pick a username that impersonates another user, brand, or public figure. We may suspend accounts that engage in identity theft. If you see a username impersonating someone you know, report it.
I haven’t picked a username yet
Some users skip the username step initially. You’ll be encouraged to set one when:
- A friend tries to find you by username.
- You want to enable your public profile.
- Your friends share their usernames and you’d like one too.
Setting a username is recommended but not strictly required to use the app.
Username vs display name
| Username | Display name | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | manga_collector | ”Manga Collector” |
| Unique? | Yes | No |
| Used for | Searches, URLs | Showing in friend lists |
| Editable? | Yes (with caveats) | Yes, freely |
You can have a normal-language display name like “Greg from TOKYOPOP” while having an underscored, lowercase username greg_tokyopop.
